AI Search Overviews Are Changing How People Find Information
If you're investing time and energy into GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), don't panic if your website traffic isn't immediately increasing. A recent study of 900 U.S. adults over a one-month period found that people clicked the sources cited in Google's AI search overviews only about 1% of the time.
At first glance, that might sound like terrible news for brands trying to get featured in AI-generated search results. But there's another side to the story.
Just because people aren't clicking the cited sources doesn't mean those sources aren't valuable. When your brand appears in an AI overview, you're still getting in front of someone actively searching for information related to your industry. And if the AI overview answers their question, they may not need to scroll through traditional search results at all.
That makes visibility in AI search valuable for brand awareness, credibility, and trust, even when it doesn't result in a click.
The bigger takeaway? Don't put all your marketing eggs in one basket. Search behavior is changing, so your strategy should be diversified across SEO, GEO, social media, email, and other channels.
The goal isn't just getting clicks. It's making sure your brand is visible wherever your audience is looking.
